Multi-product Bulk Cargo Terminal
From 2014 through 2017, Marcel Veilleux and Veilleux Associates team members (through Cardno) undertook studies, planning, operational analysis and designs for the Oakland Bulk and Oversized Terminal, a multi-product dry bulk terminal proposed by Bowie Resources and Terminal Logistics Solutions to be located in Oakland, California.
Key Services Provided
- Material handling equipment and storage facility selection
- Facility layouts
- Capital and operating cost estimation
Plan view | Soda ash handling and coal handling
Isometric view | Railcar dump station<br /> dust collection system
Unique Challenges and Constraints
- Limited surface area does not allow for looped rail track to terminal.
- Clients focused on exceeding California state environmental requirements.
Project Approach
- Computer simulations analyzed all aspects of movement for a variety of bulk materials under a phased development plan.
- Extensive modeling of railcar and ship inter-arrival times identified potential bottlenecks and their impact on operations.
Engineering Solutions
- Rail design brings cars to a marshaling area to split into four sections before proceeding to terminal.
- All material handling systems, including railcars and cargo storage are fully enclosed and also include state-of-the-art dust collection systems to provide 99.99% dust control efficiency.
